Between 1871 and 1914 thousands of diamond miners from around the world came to Kimberley. They mined the hill with picks and shovels. Eventually, the miners removed about 20 million tons of soil and rock from the area. They uncovered about 6,000 pounds (2,700 kilograms) of diamonds.

Upon arriving in Carnarvon, we could see that it is a town that went through a difficult phase but it's pulling itself back into shape. It is situated south of the Karee Mountains and is surrounded by many flat-top hills. It has some cool things in the area, like the old fort that was built on the top of one of these hills, ‘Koelkop’, which overlooks the town.

The weather forecast for Monday, the 12th of July 2021, predicted light snow in the late afternoon for the South African Astronomical Observatory in Sutherland. That morning saw a stunning show of sun rays, piercing the typical broken cloud you find before snow. The wind was picking up as is also typical for Sutherland, where I always said it snows horizontal. I can count the times I’ve seen it snow vertically on my one hand, in my almost 35 years at the Observatory.

Namaqualand - the setting for an annual wildlife fairytale. Every year in the narrow window between the cold wet winter and scorchingly hot, dry summer, flowers of all descriptions bloom in carpets of colours unimaginable, insects of equal diversity pollinate and predate, and everything from meerkats to ostriches breed. This film chronicles the magical transformation of a landscape - from the fantasy of fields of flowers to the harsh realities of a desert, and back again and uses a gang of meerkats and a group of ostriches as main characters who develop during the seasonal changes.

The Kimberley Club was founded in August 1881, by Cecil John Rhodes, then only 28 years of age. It was on the veranda of this club that he worked on most of his ideas, including the colonization of the land north and south of the Zambezi River, then named in his honor as Northern- and Southern Rhodesia. Today these are the countries of Zambia and Zimbabwe.
The billiard room of the club was the setting for the famous deal between Barney Barnato and Rhodes in 1881, whereby Rhodes acquired Barnato's share of the Kimberley diggings for just over four million pounds, the single biggest check written in that time.
