Geography and History
Van Zylsrus is a settlement in John Taolo Gaetsewe District Municipality in the Northern Cape province of South Africa. It also is the nearest settlement to The Kalahari Meerkat Project, the filming of nature TV shows such as Meerkat Manor. Van Zylsrus is situated on the banks of the dry Kuruman River that only sees water in this area after heavy rains. It is on the southern edge of the Kalahari and comprises little more than a few stores, a hotel and a post office.
Van Zylsrus is a popular stopover for tourists on their way to the Kgalagadi Transfrontier Park, Van Zylsrus is surrounded by the rust-red dunes of the Kalahari.
