GEOGRAPHY AND HISTORY
Augrabies is a small town in the Northern Cape province of South Africa, situated on the south bank of the Orange River about 100 kilometres (60 mi) downstream from Upington. It is located on the R359 road just outside the Augrabies Falls National Park, which contains the Augrabies Falls for which the town is named. The Khoi people called it 'Aukoerebis', meaning the place of the Great Noise.
The small town of Augrabies and Marshand lie on the banks of the Orange River and are surrounded by lush green vineyards. The towns are mostly populated by workers on the vineyards.
Augrabies is perhaps best known for the mighty Augrabies Falls which plunge 90 metres into a rock pool stretching into a granite ravine of around 18 km long. The deafening roar of the falls can be heard up to 40 km away.
